Buoyed is part of a family of sculptures that is evolving both in form and meaning over the past 25 yrs. The thread of meaning relates to balance, equilibrium, gravity and levity which, when kneaded into one, might amount to a visual accretion of something resembling buoyancy.
The force of Gravity puts an order upon the cosmos in the same way bearded men in robes are thought by many to also do. In this sculpture the form wrapped in a chessboard-like pattern arbitrarily takes the form of an animal.
This sculpture in white Italian marble was begun in spring of 2019 and has been reworked on two separate occasions up until August 2020. The most recent workings have removed eye markings on the animal shape and added the chequered pattern whilst also adding a small piece of marble as a base beneath the figures foot to heighten the overall sculpture.
